The fish are starting slow this year

Report Date: March 29, 2010

Hey gang

Well it’s 2010 and a new season is upon us. The fishing in panama has been a bit slow to get started. It seems old man winter wants to hold on as long as he can this year. There were record fish kills in south Florida from the cold this year. This mostly affected fish like the snook and the tarpon. In Panama City it had it’s affects to. All the fish have been slow to get here the trout and red fish have taken longer to move from the canals on to the flats. And worst of all the bait has been hard to find. But hope is on the horizon, the water is starting to warm up and with it the fish are starting to show up. The sheep head showed up on the jetty a few days ago and we managed to get a few in the boat before the wind blew us away.

We also saw a Spanish mackerel get caught so there not far away. Some bull red fish have been there most the winter but we didn’t manage to get any on this trip. There have been rumors of cobia starting to show up and they should be here for the next few weeks, so if your in panama city book a trip with one of the local guides and go on the sight fishing adventure of a life time. With many of these fine eating fish weighing in the 60-pound range you can under stand why a lot of people go after them and with grouper season opening April 1st you might find it hard to get a guide so book now or get left on the dock!!!! By the way I have been getting some nice grouper the past few weeks so if that’s on the menu, then book now before the water warms and they move back to deeper water.

The king run should start around the end of April so get ready for screaming drags and big fish can’t wait. So until next time, bent poles and tight lines to all!!!!
